REDWOOD CITY, Calif.
Jurors have begun deliberating in the case of a prominent San Mateo County child psychiatrist charged with molesting some of his young patients.
Dr. William Ayres is charged with nine counts of child molestation. Authorities allege that he molested several boys between 1988 and 1996.
He has pleaded not guilty in the case.
Jurors began deliberations Tuesday after a 23-day trial.
Ayres took the stand on his own behalf during the trial and insisted that physical exams he conducted on some of his patients were necessary because he had concerns about their physical health.
If convicted, the 77-year-old Ayres could spend the rest of his life in prison.

While a former psychiatrist who had inappropriate sexual contact with a female patient he was treating avoided a prison sentence, a judge said he has already faced substantial consequences for his actions after losing his medical license and his career.
Winnebago County Circuit Court Judge Barbara Key withheld sentence and placed Charles D. Morgan, 63, of Neenah, on probation for six years Thursday for a conviction on two counts of sexual exploitation by a therapist. As a condition of his probation, Key ordered Morgan to serve nine months in the county jail and perform 200 hours of community service. An additional three months of jail time was imposed and stayed.

Another Hampton Roads physician has had his medical license suspended for alleged inappropriate prescription of powerful narcotics to patients with chronic pain.
The Virginia Beach psychiatrist, Dr. Mohammed Soori, also is accused of improper sexual activity with patients. Soori faces a hearing in June before the Virginia Board of Medicine, which suspended his license Jan. 29, citing “a substantial danger to the public health or safety.”
It is the second recent license suspension involving a Virginia Beach doctor. Last month, Dr. Stephen Plotnick, a rheumatologist, surrendered his license for two years after the medical board accused him of contributing to a series of patient deaths by improperly prescribing potent painkillers.

A former Fremantle psychologist who used bondage and discipline role-playing to treat a 22-year-old bulimic woman has been ordered to see a psychiatrist after arguing he should not face disciplinary proceedings because he had post traumatic stress disorder since being cleared of sexually assaulting the client.
Bruce Alistair Beaton was acquitted last year of unlawful and indecent assault, and aggravated sexual penetration of the young woman, who also claimed the psychologist whipped her with a homemade cat-o’-nine-tails while treating her between January and March 2005.
